Memorial Weekend

Our Memorial Weekend was mostly spent on projects around the house. We did go to a family dinner at Jeff's Mom's on Saturday. Had lots of Yummy food and a very nice visit with everyone. Jeff and Anthony got my garden ready for me to transplant my salsa garden plants. I had some furniture given to me so we picked that up and I've been working on it to get it ready to go in the house.

The challenge will be seeing if I can get the orange dye out of the love seat...if not I have a pretty "Shabby Chic" slip cover picked out from Target.

Jeff and the kids also started tearing down walls down stairs to make it a large open fun room for movies, games and friends.

We'll be moving our big sectional down there and putting my new couch and love seat in the living room. It will be nice to have something more feminine again. The living room will be for school, reading and piano.

Was going to go to some friends house to night for dinner, but Holli got sick. Jeff, Ginger and Anthony went on with out Holli and I.

Sick Holli Napping with Yoda....Awwwww!!!
Yes, that is Yoda. He is naked and tired from his trip to the groomers.

4-H Record Books are due this week, we have a 4-H meeting and lots of projects started that need finishing. Looks like its going to be a busy week.

Mandi & Bryce's House

My oldest daughter Mandi and her husband Bryce are building a house. I'm so excited for them. We have been making trips out to see the progress.

Here are some pictures I took a few days ago.

My First Garden

My Salsa Garden....just getting started.
Parsley, Cilantro, Tomatoes, Onions, Jalapeños, & Cayenne Peppers

Where the Garden is Going

My Boys Working Hard

My Garden is coming along. Jeff and Anthony have been working hard on getting my spot ready for me to transplant my plants.
Kind of late in the year to start a garden, but I'm hopeful we'll be making some homemade salsa sometime this year.

Look...I have a Tomato Growing in my Flower Bed!

My List of Ten Project Update

My List of Ten is working out pretty good I think. I haven't had a day where I got all ten things done. I'm only up to day four with this project. I'm not going to be to hard on my self. So far eight things completed is my record. I may have been picking out to big of projects to complete on my second day.

I'm feeling hopeful and that's the important thing. In stead of looking at my goal in whole I'm looking at it as just somethings on a daily list that I'd like to do and it is much less stressful. I'm actually enjoying it and making things for my home like I used to do.

I made some decorative pot holders to hang in the kitchen and I'm working on some that match the kitchen, but are to use. Some of my pot holders are looking shabby and some don't match my color scheme. Replacing my old pot holders with homemade ones is part of my house beautiful goal. Thinking about making some curtains for the dinning room also. (Maybe I can get the kids to help me and they can enter what they make in the fair...Just a Thought.)

I also painted some fish decor that was in my upstairs bathroom to better match my color scheme.

I Love Pink & Green!!!

Little by little I will get to my goal. Going to have fun with it along the way.

List of Ten

Was reading back over Easy Homeschooling Techniques by Lorraine Curry. In chapter 4 she talks about Making Order. That is something I need to do on so many levels. My home was thrown out the window a while back. I've gone from Martha Stewart to Lazy Susan. It's time to remedy that. She says, "There's no fun like work! I Love to work because I love to see the results of work-clean house, a redecorated house, a weed free garden, knowledgeable children...and so on" This needs to be my motto.
Curry talks about setting goals and how to plan to reach those goals. In chapter 5, Planning for Success, she mentions making a list of ten things to do the next day. This will help you to reach your goals. Mary Kay called this her "35,000 List." Every night she made a list of ten things to accomplish the next day. And we all know that Mary Kay was successful. So here I go, I'm making lists.
I'm starting slow, just setting a couple to get me started. My Goals are, Long Term- "A Clean Pretty House" and Short Term-"Finish 4-H Record Books." Last night I made my list of ten things to do.
Here it is:
1. Help Holli work on 4-H Record Book
2. Help Anthony work on 4-H Record Book
3. Clean fish tank
4. Clean crafts off kitchen table
5. Deep clean corner of kitchen counter by microwave
6. Start a give away box
7. Return clippers to Wal-Mart
8. Trim Yoda's hair on one leg...he doesn't sit still very well
9. Put away stuff in floor on my side of bed
10. Start a craft for my home

I better get busy..."There's no fun like work!"
TTYL : )

May 25, 2010

Holli & Anthony are at work today and Gigi & I are trying to be productive. She's in the kitchen whipping up some banana bread as I type this. Had some ripe bananas we didn't want to waist. I've been working on some deep cleaning in the kitchen. That project may be bigger than I can accomplish in one day. Oh well, every little bit helps.

Yoda before hair cut.

Yoda partial hair cut.

Have been working on giving our new dog, Yoda a haircut. He's pretty matted and getting attacked by ticks in our yard. We decided we should just cut it all off and start over. He doesn't like to sit still and the trimmers I bought from Wal-Mart don't work so this is a challenge. We had made an appointment with the groomers to get this done, but I can't wait for June first. He keeps bringing in surprises after his potty trips. Ugh!!!! Forgot the joys of having an indoor dog.

The UPS man just dropped off a book I ordered about Fleece Crafts. Don't you just love the UPS man. Sorry Honey, he brings me books. I'm hoping this book helps me figure out what project to do in the Beginners Sewing Class I'm doing for our county 4-H Club in June.

Thinking about doing this one...

I guess I better get some things done...TTYL! : )

May 13, 2010

I'm just going to talk a little about my day. We had a piano given to us. Praise God!! I have been praying for one for a long time. We were able to get it moved in-spite of the rain.
Weeded my flower bed and moved some begonias around to make room for the four tomato plants I got for Mother's Day. I also got some plants started for a salsa garden. I know, it's kind of late to start a garden, but we'll see how it turns out.
Trying to get some ideas laid out for 4-H Fun Shop workshops. We have to get signed up for that tomorrow.

As for school, the kids are working quietly. We're still gradually making the transition over to a more Charlotte Mason method of schooling with Ginger and Anthony. Holli is nearly finished with her Penn Foster program. She only has to complete three more courses and she will get her diploma. I'm very proud of her independence and diligence towards her education.

In All things be Grateful. Continue to think on the things you are grateful for and the universe will open it's self up to you. It's Crazy the connections that have been made over the last few days that I've been focused on Gratitude. God works in mysterious ways...I think He built it into Creation. The things you need, the things you want, and the answers you need are on their way. : )

Reading To Your Children is the Greatest Gift

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be-
I had a mother who read to me.
~Strickland Gillilan

Reading aloud is an essential part to bringing up and educating a child.
Reading out load to your child increases her vocabulary and comprehension. This will also serve as a natural way to learn Language Arts. When a child is hearing quality vocabulary and writing she will become a natural at writing and speaking.
If you read quality books with virtues you will give your child the tools she needs to live with others. There are many things to learn from the stories we read in books, such as, forgiveness, compassion, responsibility, persistence.... Wouldn't it be nice to be familiar with the things that happen in our lives and the ways that others have dealt with them before we have to face them ourselves? By reading quality books to your child you are giving her a foundation that will give her the advantage in life.
Unfortunately, I wasn't consistent about reading aloud to my children when they were young. However, I believe it is never to late. We spend a lot of time reading in our home. I read aloud to my children at least four days a week. I choose books that are well written and have many virtues to learn from. Everything I have read about this subject has given me confidence that my children are reaping the benefits of reading aloud regardless of their age.
My hopes for posting this is that others will see the benefits of reading aloud to their children and start today.

"The hand that rocks the cradle
is the hand that rules the world"

There are lots of wonderful books written on this subject. One of the best books I have read on this topic is the Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. Other books that help you pick out quality literature are Honey for a Child's Heart and Honey for a Teens Heart by Gladys Hunt

Homeschooling

Thanks to my experiences and my children's experiences in Public School along with my son's past health problems and past learning differences I'm a homeschooling mom. My kids weren't always homeschooled. If I had known that it was legal and that people other than religious groups (Pentecostals with long hair and long dresses) and hippies homeschooled I would have done it from the beginning.
I love all the time I get to spend with my children and I can't imagine doing anything else. We have learned to be there for each other and to depend on each other like I believe a family should. My children are each others best friends and I wouldn't want it any other way. Friends come and go, but family is always there.

God and the Universe

I'm a Christian Universalist. That simply put means that I believe God is Love and that He made a way for all to be saved. I believe that no one will burn in a burning hell for all eternity.

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. ~1 John 2:2 (NIV)

Education

I attended school at Locust Grove Public Schools. I don't really feel that I learned much. Did manage to make a few friends along the way. Although, I really don't see them much.
I've had some college education through Roger's State University. Someday I would like to finish that endeavor. If for no other reason to say I finished what I started.

"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education."
